(AsiaGameHub) –   Ohio is taking steps to prevent residents from using credit cards for sports betting. This appears to be reflected in Governor Mike DeWine’s recent proposal.

Earlier this week, DeWine’s administration submitted a draft rule that was officially presented by the Ohio Casino Control Commission for public review.

Not Applicable to Debit Cards

The commission has also initiated a public comment period through May 15, 2026. Following this, the regulator will conduct a public hearing and forward the proposal to a state legislative panel for further review.

If approved, the changes could take effect later this summer.

The proposed draft rule does not apply to debit cards, which have been the preferred payment method among sports bettors for funding their accounts.

If enacted, Ohio would join at least nine other U.S. states that have already implemented bans on credit card use in sports wagering.

Limited Effects?

However, the actual impact may be less significant than anticipated, as major operators such as FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and Caesars have already prohibited credit card deposits over the past year.

Additionally, credit card companies have started imposing higher fees and interest rates on sportsbook transactions, treating them similarly to cash advances.

For reference, a previous legislative proposal last month aimed to reverse online sports betting regulations and included a credit card deposit ban. Sports betting became legal in Ohio in 2023.

Bill co-sponsor and state representative Gary Click noted that gambling addicts often experience prolonged losing streaks and typically realize the financial consequences only after racking up unpayable credit card debt.
