Commissioner Greg Sankey stated that recent events—such as high-profile cases involving athletes and betting rule breaches—played a role in making this measure a priority. He highlighted that the SEC’s focus is on safeguarding the fairness of competitions and the overall health of student-athletes via educational and monitoring initiatives.

SEC Strengthens Gambling Protections to Maintain Fair Play

This new requirement is the result of a number of steps the SEC has already implemented in recent years. The conference has teamed up with a monitoring service to track betting trends and identify unusual activity instantly. Other efforts include releasing public availability reports for athletes in major sports, placing informational materials in locker rooms, and offering anonymous ways to report gambling-related issues.

Betting interest in SEC games has surged, with billions of dollars reportedly bet on conference team matches during the previous academic year. This increasing financial focus has added more pressure on athletes, especially as more states keep legalizing sports betting.

SEC member universities have also taken steps on their campuses to inform students and staff about gambling expectations.
