Local officials report that two people carried out the heist in Tacony at approximately 4 a.m. on Thursday. The alleged perpetrators reportedly entered a convenience store located at a Sunoco station on the intersection of Torresdale and Cottman avenues. According to ABC6 Action News, after disconnecting a large gaming terminal, they rolled it out of the shop using a dolly, placed it into a vehicle, and escaped.

Law enforcement stated that the stolen device contained roughly $8,000 at the time of the theft. The perpetrators remain at large, and detectives are seeking assistance from the community to resolve the investigation.

The stolen unit is known as a “skill game,” a slot-machine-style device that has sparked a significant discussion throughout Pennsylvania. While these terminals allow players to influence outcomes via minor interactions, critics argue they function similarly to standard gambling machines, albeit without equivalent oversight.

In August 2024, Philadelphia enacted limitations on these devices to mitigate the disturbances and criminal activity associated with them in neighborhood establishments. Current regulations cap the quantity of machines in specific locations, including liquor-licensed establishments with adequate seating, and mandate that payouts be conducted electronically rather than in cash.

A ruling from Pennsylvania’s supreme court is anticipated shortly regarding whether skill games fall under the definition of gambling in state statutes. Although previous judgments suggested that current gambling laws might not cover them if player interaction is involved, the ultimate ruling could transform the sector.
